Dr. Jordan Peterson’s Wisdom: Tips to Make Your Life Better
Our professional lives are inextricably linked to our total well-being.
After all, our thoughts and actions have an impact on every element of our lives, whether personal or professional.
This means that we should all take a time to reflect on what we do on a daily basis.
We should also take a minute to consider how we feel and whether we are living our lives to the best of our abilities.
Of course, perfection when it comes to the way we live every day of our lives is an impossible feat to achieve. But we can and we should still try.
Dr. Peterson, fortunately, is on hand to assist.
But, first, who is Jordan Peterson?
One of his publications, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, was one of the best-selling books of the year. Peterson's YouTube and podcast talks have a large following as well.
Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life, the sequel to this book that was just released, is another example of his work gaining traction.
Peterson offers insightful life advice based on ancient wisdom, psychology, mythology, and personal experiences in his books and presentations.
Life-changing pieces of advice from Dr. Peterson
Let me walk you through some of the most important life-changing pieces of advice coming from Dr. Peterson. Also, let me be clear that these ‘tips’ were handpicked by myself.
It is completely fine for you to have a different opinion. After all, Dr. Peterson really shared a lot and I can come to terms that I may have prioritized some things that hit home closely due to my life experiences.
Tip 1: Take Responsibility For Helping Yourself
We are frequently our own harshest critics. That is why we find it easier to look after others than we do ourselves.
In response to these two occurrences, Peterson proposes the second life rule: "handle yourself as if you were someone you are responsible for helping."
The majority of us believe we are unworthy of assistance.
This thinking leads to self-destructive habits like berating ourselves for our shortcomings or neglecting our health. The key to overcoming such an attitude is to accept responsibility for one's own well-being in the same way that one does for the people they care about.
The way to do this, according to Peterson, is to first write out your principles and keep to them.
Second, you should congratulate yourself on sticking to your values.
Last but not least, instead of beating yourself up when you fail, be gentle to yourself and try harder next time.
Tip 2: Choose Your Friends Wisely
There is a saying in Serbian that goes something like this:
You are much like the people you spend your time with.
On the surface, this might not be something worth praising. After all, people are shaped by experiences and other people. It is inevitable that we all take after our parents since we grew up with them.
But, no one could have chosen different parents. Be it for better or worse. However, we can choose better people around us.
The company we keep has a significant impact on our life results. The third rule of life, according to Peterson, is to make friends with individuals who are beneficial to us.
This does not mean that we should make friends just so that we can take advantage of them.
Instead, when you surround yourself with individuals who want to see your life improve, you can expect them to help you. When you're going wrong, they point you in the proper direction.
People that aren't good for you, on the other hand, will not only drag you down but also encourage negative behavior.
Surrounding oneself with sick individuals may not be easy, but the price you'll have to pay as a result can be significant. Going out with healthy people will undoubtedly help you grow.
This applies to both mental and physical well-being.
Tip 3: Go After Meaning, Do Not Lose Sleep Over Benefits
Peterson teaches us to defer gratification in order to make our lives more meaningful.
In the long run, pursuing things that provide us instant pleasure tends to deprive us of a sense of purpose. On the contrary, resisting temptations enriches our lives and makes us happier.
We must pay attention to the world and its hardships in order to find meaning in life.
We will find answers to produce a better future for ourselves and others if we think about it. Furthermore, finding significance comes from doing something every day to improve the world.
Final thoughts
Yes, some may say that these pieces of advice are easier said than done. And, that may be the truth.
But, it is worth taking a breather, a moment of self-reflection, to stop and see where we really are in life. We also need to figure out if we are truly happy or not.
After all, we, the human beings, are quite expendable. Why shouldn’t we try to make the most out of this chance at life that we have to make ourselves the best possible version of ourselves and to live out our lives in a meaningful way?
